Lankan cricket chairman Ranatunga has been criticizing the IPL for the past few months.
He wants his team to honor its committment to tour England next summer. Problem ofcourse is many of the Lankan players contracted to play in the IPL are not keen on the English tour. They are up in arms. Ranatunga has said that IPL has benefited only the Indian board and none of the other cricket boards have made any money so, why should we support them at the cost of our country’s honor and also earn money for the board which is in financial trouble. Into this controversy has stepped in the Sri Lankan goverment which has asked Ranatunga to select others interested in playing for the country and leave the IPL members out.
Meanwhile the Sri Lankan cricket board has received a $40million bailout package from the BCCI to help them out of their financial crisis. Ranatunga reacted angrily saying they can’t be bought with money. BCCI is angry that what was a confidential matter was revealed to the media by Ranatunga.
In retaliation they have threatened to put on hold all future tours to Sri Lanka. It’s getting murkier by the day… It’s a truth that success becomes a lot of enemies. It looks like IPL’s success has earned many enemies.
