{"id":689,"date":"2012-03-24T16:58:53","date_gmt":"2012-03-24T16:58:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/roofrepairscost.com\/?p=18"},"modified":"2012-03-24T16:58:53","modified_gmt":"2012-03-24T16:58:53","slug":"shingle-roof-repairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/guydz.com\/home\/roof-repair\/shingle-roof-repairs\/","title":{"rendered":"Shingle Roof Repairs &#8211; How To Fix The Most Common Problems With Shingle Roofs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The old joke about how to cure a sick race horse (&#8220;shoot it&#8221;) would probably be similar\u00a0to asking a roofing contractor how to fix most of the common shingle roof problems; he would probably reply &#8220;new roof&#8221;.\u00a0 Asphalt-based roofing will eventually wear out, but fortunately for roofs (and horses!) some problems can be fixed.<\/p>\n<p>Should you attempt your own shingle roof repairs?\u00a0 Contacting a professional roofing contractor will be essential if any of the following factors apply:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The roof is steep-sloped, pitch more than 25 degrees<\/li>\n<li>Your roof is over 24 foot above the ground<\/li>\n<li>You have a\u00a0health condition, for example heart problems<\/li>\n<li>You have a fear of heights<\/li>\n<li>You have limited experience in DIY (do-it-yourself)<\/li>\n<li>You do not\u00a0have up-to-date\u00a0building insurance (check your coverage)\u00a0or you do not have building insurance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shingle roof repairs &#8211; common problems that usually cannot be repaired:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shingle granules excessively worn &#8211; roof needs replacing<\/li>\n<li>Shingle tabs fraying or curling &#8211; are an aging\u00a0or deep-rooted problem<\/li>\n<li>Rafters or trusses with sagging between them &#8211; this is structural and re-shingling won&#8217;t fix it.<\/li>\n<li>Damage caused by adverse weather conditions &#8211; call your building insurance company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Roofing safety precautions must be followed if you decide to do your own shingle roof\u00a0 repairs. Some shingle roof repairs you CAN consider doing are:<\/p>\n<p>A few missing tabs or shingles caused by wind damage<br \/>\nMinor tears by tree-branches that have not punctured the plywood<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shingle roof repairs &#8211; How to repair wind damaged roof shingles:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, measure three tabs on your roof.\u00a0 36\u00a0inches is the US (imperial) standard, and 39 1\/3 inches (one meter) is the metric standard for shingles.\u00a0 To aid purchase, take a sample tab to your supplier to get the best match.\u00a0 It will be best to work out the quantity of shingles needed as you will be required to buy at least one bundle (equivalent to three tabs).<\/p>\n<p>To remove the adhesive under each tab use a basic pry bar (such as Stanley&#8217;s Wonder Bar, which is ideal).\u00a0 Start above the problem area and raise the tabs to expose the damaged shingle.\u00a0 Insert the pry bar under the damaged shingle&#8217;s tab &#8211; under each nail and pry nail out.\u00a0 Do the same in the shingles above it so you can release the whole shingle.\u00a0 Replacement shingles should be nailed down and tab cement used to seal new tabs from colder weather.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shingle roof repairs &#8211; How to repair leaks caused by worn out flanges:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In preparation take measurements and\/or a photograph to your supplier and purchase a new flange in advance.\u00a0 Follow the procedure as above to remove the worn out flange and nearby shingles.\u00a0 The lowest ones should be replaced first, and the replacement set in tab cement.
